RafaMore Keyrats shows this weekend

August 27, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Keyrats, Music, The Grove

I remember a time when Keyrats shows were few and far between; not anymore (which is great, btw). This weekend they’re tearing it up again. First at Cefalo’s on Friday night, then at the Boardwalk Tavern on Saturday night. I think these Keyrats shows might be the only reason to even go out to the Grove anymore.

RafaToners Tonight at Flavour

August 26, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Music, The Grove

I’m late to the party again with this one, but if you want something uniquely interesting to do tonight I suggest you get to Flavour at around 9pm. The Toners, a mock reggaeton group spearheaded by my friend Alex Hernandez Fumero, will be performing live there tonight. I can’t make it, but I bet there will be something to make you laugh going on over there.

The Keyrats are playing not one, but two shows on Saturday.

The first is during the day, at a little local music festival called Festidan. It’ll take place from noon to sunset on Saturday the 23rd, and also feature Outereach, Day Music Died, The Kut, Jimmy Whisper, and 2am.

Then, just in case you’re busy during the day, at night the Keyrats will be playing at Dolce in Miami Beach. The place is located at 15th and Ocean Drive, so come check it out.

RafaKeyrats Live at Cefalo’s again this Friday 6/6

June 4, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Keyrats, Music, The Grove

Smell the smell of Keyrats

In case you missed it when they played their little acoustic set last Friday, the Keyrats are playing again at Cefalo’s in the Grove. Everyone I got to talk to said it was a good time, and I think people were even hoping it was going to be a regular thing. For them and for all of you who missed it, it’s not a bad Friday night.

On a related note, I’ve heard that Mike, the bassist, is leaving the Keyrats. He’s taking a job in Naples, and will continue to play with the rats on and off until a proper replacement is found. Not exactly the best news, but sometimes these things happen. Even though Alex is the driving force behind the Keyrats, I always felt Mike played a big part in defining some of the Keyrats’ more wacky, party loving style. On the backend of things he also contributed a lot to keeping the rats focused and organized. We all wish him the best, and hope he comes back to play a show or two in the future.

RafaKeyRats Live at Cefalo’s Friday

May 15, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Keyrats, Music, The Grove

keyrats: shady characters

Been jonesing for some KeyRats? This Friday they’ll be playing live at Cefalo’s in the Grove. From what I understand it’ll be a happy hour type of event, from 8pm to midnight. The KeyRats will be playing acoustic (whatever that means) and will be playing a mix of originals and covers.

I heard the last happy hour event in Grove Isle went pretty well, so don’t be reluctant to pass by and see what’s going on.

RafaOutereach in the Herald; CD Release Tomorrow

May 1, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Music, Outereach

Outereach

Outereach is making moves. They have an article about them in the Herald’s new website Miami.com, and they have their new album coming out tomorrow. The article is a bit of a fluff piece; it talks about how the band has a great sound, and how they’ve been around for a while. It finishes with a great Miami cliche, mentioning how the new album “…includes a cornucopia of songs — exactly what you would expect from a band gathering its influences from a melting pot like Miami.”

Don’t let that detract, you, though. Outereach does have a great sound, and if their last album is anything to go by, this new album should be great. The album release party is being held tomorrow night at Flavour. Get out there to the Grove and check it out.

RafaThere’s a new Florida state song!

April 24, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Florida, Music

I bet you didn’t even know there was an old Florida state song; shows what a Floridian you are. Well there was, and it kicked ass. The only problem is that it was a bit offensive; in particular a line about “darkies” in the chorus. It’s called Old Folks at Home. Here it is being sung by the beautiful Rosa Ponselle.

Now, you’re probably thinking, “how could they replace such a kick-ass song? Nothing can compare!,” but the truth is the song has its flaws. For one, the already mentioned offensiveness. Then there’s the guy who wrote the song, Stephen Foster. He wasn’t even from Florida, and he didn’t write the song for or about Florida. He chose one lyric (”Way down upon the Swanee river”) about Florida because it sounded right, and that’s it.

Now we have the new song. This song is actually written by Jan Hinton, a Pompano Beach music teacher. The song is written for and about Florida, and after listening to it only once, it already held a special place in my heart, as I’m sure it will yours too. It’s called (wait for it): Florida.

Now you know what to sing if you’re feeling like a proud Floridian. If for any reason you’re feeling like a proud Floridian and a proud Key Rat, you can always sing Florida, and then follow that with the KBES school song. Sorry, there’s no YouTube video for that one (yet!).

RafaWinter Music Conference + Ultra 2008

March 25, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Miami, Music, Rolling balls, South Beach

I don’t really get too excited for the Winter Music Conference; I’m just not very interested in the whole DJ and club music scene. That said, the WMC brings with it the best talent in the industry, and they all descend into Miami Beach for one long weekend a year. I say long weekend because the whole thing starts off today and goes through Saturday night, with Friday and Saturday playing host to Ultra fest.

What you can expect is that every club on the beach will be packed through Saturday with world renowned DJs and their fans. Getting into any decent club on the beach will probably be impossible, and if you do manage to get in, it’ll be packed with a bunch of dudes (because they make up the majority of hardcore fans). If this is your scene, or maybe you just want to catch your favorite DJ in a small venue, get to the beach this week.

Maybe instead you’d rather just rave one or two days, outside and surrounded by a bunch of zombies. Then just head over to Bicentennial Park on Friday or Saturday and be sure to take a lot of Vick’s Vapo Rub.
