RafaOrange Bowl Too

September 24, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Miami, football

Not to be outdone by the Miami Arena, the Orange Bowl looks like this now:

The last remnants of the OB

It’d be kind of cool if someone set up a huge tailgate for a UM game at the site.

RafaWatch the Miami Arena come down

September 22, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Explosions, Miami

In case you missed the news this weekend, the Miami Arena was demolished on Sunday. Built only in 1989, it lasted less than 20 years. Once the home of the Miami Heat, the Florida Panthers, and my personal favorite, the Wringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, now it’s gone.

Even if you did hear about it, you probably didn’t get to watch it. So now I present you with great footage of the roof being imploded.

RafaWii Fit Girl’s Boyfriend is a huge tool

September 22, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Games, Home Depot, Miami

You may remember the story about Lauren Bernat, the Miami girl who played Wii Fit and became an internet sensation. Well the other day they were on the Tyra Banks show (or “Tyra” wtf) and he took his pants off and did the Wii Fit hula hoop for a second.

The YouTube description calls it payback but it actually looks like they’re cashing in.

RafaMiami Beach Trash

September 15, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Miami, South Beach, Trashy trash

We all know a lot of trashy people go to Miami Beach but that’s not what this is about. No, this is about how dirty the actual beach is in Miami Beach. Cory Friedman, a Beach resident, put up some YouTube videos in the past couple of weeks detailing just how disgusting the beach is, and government officials are finally taking notice.

This type of thing can be really bad for Miami, which already has a bit of trashy, dirty, crime-ridden cholo stigma, especially when we rely so heavily on tourism. Also, this should shutup all those people who think the Key beach is dirty because on certain days it has seeweed; I think I’d rather step on seeweed than cigarrette butts.

RafaWiiFit girl is a Miami native

June 11, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Games, Miami, Videos

You may have seen this video in the past week or so. In the video, titled “Why every guy should buy their girlfriend a Wii”, Lauren Bernat is taped by her boyfriend doing the hula hoop game in WiiFit. Well it turns out Lauren is actually from Miami, and from what I’ve heard, she actually used to be on the key everyday hanging with some of the midside warriors.

The video took off and has received over 2 million views. She apparently had no idea it was being filmed, and freaked out when it became so popular.I had an inkling it had to be from around here because butts like that are native to Miami, but now an article in the herald has confirmed it. The video has been so popular people even thought it might be a bit of viral marketing on Nintendo’s part (it’s not).

RafaMiami commissioners approve building in the Everglades

May 1, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Everglades, Florida, Miami

Everglades

This is the kind of stuff that makes you wonder if anyone is paying any attention at all to what goes on in the government. See, in Miami Dade we have this imaginary do not cross line called the Urban Development Boundary. It was created because someone at some point knew that developers would find it lucrative to pave the entire peninsula, and in an effort to save some of the wetlands we have, the line was drawn.

Last Thursday Miami Dade commissioners voted to let Lowes put a store up on the other side of the line. Without hesitation, the majority of the commissioners voted in favor of siding with the company on this and just pissing all over the UBD. TIME has an article up about the whole thing, poking fun at the fact that Miami’s government has a history of bowing to developers. The main proponent of the change in the line is commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, who is already under investigation for accepting gifts from developers in exchange for votes. The TIME article also mentions that another backer is a commissioner who once said how she disliked manatees in an effort to push agenda that would screw manatee preservation.

Trying to justify the whole thing, Diaz says that the part where they would build the Lowes is, “muck. It’s not pristine wetlands,” as if there’s some kind of difference. The fact is that no one in Florida will ever see a Florida panther and the more we encroach into the area the more we’ll destroy the ecosystem. Nevermind that you could put a Lowes in a hundred different places across the county without having to cross into preserved land. The only real saving grace to the whole situation is that Miami mayor Carlos Alvarez is strongly against moving the UBD, and is trying to veto the commission’s decision.

RafaMiami’s Biggest Foam Party

April 15, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Miami

I’m not sure when this took place, but Sony filmed a commercial in downtown Miami where they covered a couple of streets in foam.

It looks pretty damn fun. They built the world’s largest foam machine for the shoot, a machine which could make 500,000 gallons of foam per minute. Then they gave a bunch of people in the street cameras (that’s what is being advertised) and let them make amateur videos.

It’s funny how something like this, which seems pretty damn big in scale, can happen in Miami and most of us don’t even notice; we end up catching it on YouTube just like everyone else.

RafaGuy shot dead at Studio A

During a hip hop night at Studio A early this morning, a man was shot and another injured. I know most of you don’t go to Studio A, but I’m sure a good amount of you have probably been one time or another.

It’s scary to think that this kind of stuff happens at locales you and I may frequent.
