Cocowalk to get new Movie theater; Bowling Alley
May 20, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: The Grove

According to the Coconut Grove Grapevine Cocowalk will be seeing some renovations soon. There’s not much detail at the moment, but it’s confirmed that the old AMC theaters are out, with a new Muvico megaplex coming. The new theater will have a restaurant and bar, as well as all the things you’d expect from a new theater, such as stadium seating and big seats like the one’s you’re used to at Sunset Place.
Cocowalk will also be getting a Lucky Strike Lanes, like the one in South Beach. It’s all expected to open October 2009.
The whole thing is much needed, in my opinion. Cocowalk has become this decrepit place where no one goes except noobs/tourists who don’t know where else to check out. The movie theater now is a derelict shadow of it’s former self complete with weird smells, uncomfortable seats, and poor visibility when there’s a crowd.
The bowling alley (which includes a lounge) will be a nice change of pace from Greenstreets and the other bars. Hopefully they can rival some of the drink specials.

Originally this wasn’t going to be posted, because it’s not perfect. Still, considering we probably won’t see a new one for a bit, I’m posting it.
This video was taken solely by my boy Rulo, and edited completely by him. It’s his first time ever editing a video; the guy’s a natural.
If you want something like this made for your fishing expeditions, post a comment and maybe you’ll get lucky.
KeyRats Live at Cefalo’s Friday
May 15, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Keyrats, Music, The Grove

Been jonesing for some KeyRats? This Friday they’ll be playing live at Cefalo’s in the Grove. From what I understand it’ll be a happy hour type of event, from 8pm to midnight. The KeyRats will be playing acoustic (whatever that means) and will be playing a mix of originals and covers.
I heard the last happy hour event in Grove Isle went pretty well, so don’t be reluctant to pass by and see what’s going on.
Miami commissioners approve building in the Everglades
May 1, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Everglades, Florida, Miami

This is the kind of stuff that makes you wonder if anyone is paying any attention at all to what goes on in the government. See, in Miami Dade we have this imaginary do not cross line called the Urban Development Boundary. It was created because someone at some point knew that developers would find it lucrative to pave the entire peninsula, and in an effort to save some of the wetlands we have, the line was drawn.
Last Thursday Miami Dade commissioners voted to let Lowes put a store up on the other side of the line. Without hesitation, the majority of the commissioners voted in favor of siding with the company on this and just pissing all over the UBD. TIME has an article up about the whole thing, poking fun at the fact that Miami’s government has a history of bowing to developers. The main proponent of the change in the line is commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, who is already under investigation for accepting gifts from developers in exchange for votes. The TIME article also mentions that another backer is a commissioner who once said how she disliked manatees in an effort to push agenda that would screw manatee preservation.
Trying to justify the whole thing, Diaz says that the part where they would build the Lowes is, “muck. It’s not pristine wetlands,” as if there’s some kind of difference. The fact is that no one in Florida will ever see a Florida panther and the more we encroach into the area the more we’ll destroy the ecosystem. Nevermind that you could put a Lowes in a hundred different places across the county without having to cross into preserved land. The only real saving grace to the whole situation is that Miami mayor Carlos Alvarez is strongly against moving the UBD, and is trying to veto the commission’s decision.

Outereach in the Herald; CD Release Tomorrow
May 1, 2008 | Posted by: Rafa | Filed In: Music, Outereach
Outereach is making moves. They have an article about them in the Herald’s new website Miami.com, and they have their new album coming out tomorrow. The article is a bit of a fluff piece; it talks about how the band has a great sound, and how they’ve been around for a while. It finishes with a great Miami cliche, mentioning how the new album “…includes a cornucopia of songs — exactly what you would expect from a band gathering its influences from a melting pot like Miami.”
Don’t let that detract, you, though. Outereach does have a great sound, and if their last album is anything to go by, this new album should be great. The album release party is being held tomorrow night at Flavour. Get out there to the Grove and check it out.
Please don't take it, don't copy it, don't use it for profit. tips@ratradio.net | Entries and comments feeds.
